How to Sew a Tiered Skirt—Project Journal
In today's video, I'm sharing the process of sewing an elastic waist skirt with three tiers, decorative trim and in-seam pockets. The majority of the video uses captions, without any voiceover. So you can just watch and enjoy.
The design of this skirt is one that I created for my new Substack newsletter, called Sewing With Numbers. In it, I share how to draft your own sewing patterns using math. I've shared exercises in drafting waistbands and gathers.
A couple of weeks ago, I shared how to draft this skirt to your own custom measurements. You can even choose your own skirt length and width of elastic. In addition to text explanations, there are lots of diagrams to make everything visually clear. Plus, you can download worksheets to keep track of the measurements and drafting formulas.

I ordered an online pants pattern described as "high waisted", and I am short waited as well. After making I really liked the wide elastic waistband, legs, inseam pockets, BUT it was far too high waisted. I watched your video & removed 1 1/2'' from the rise, front & back, based on the fact that I could roll the entire waistband of 1 1/2 " over on itself to what seemed like the right fit. I had recently purchased a plastic grid ruler & followed your brilliant demo to remake the pattern. I omitted the inseam pockets to focus on the fit of the rise & instead made patch pockets for the back. Complete success on my 2nd try of this pattern & I cannot thank you enough.

Thanks for your video. I bought a Janome in the 70s, when I first left school and I absolutely loved it. It never failed me. But I brought it in for a service a few years ago and was told it was too far gone and it couldn't be repaired, I was devasted. I bought the Janome DC2101, which has great reviews, but I hate it. So I've decided to buy a new machine so I'm researching machines and thinking seriously about what I dislike about this machine as I hope it will give me guidance on what I want and need.

Thanks for this. How do you finish your seams? I would be afraid that the drape (especially in knits) would be effected. Do you have a similar video about 'colour' blocking a striped pattern to make it multi directional?

So nice to see this video. I have a white FW that my mother gave me in 1968, and I'm still using it. I have the button hole attachment, but just made bound button holes before then. I don't have the zig zag attachment, but pinking shears are a great substitute to keep raw edges from raveling. You are lucky to have had such a generous aunt. Cheers from Oklahoma!

Your explanation and demonstration are super and I appreciate that you share this technique. Over several decades I've probably sewn at least a mile of gathered seams using your double-basting thread technique with a couple of twists: 1) I learned to find the mid-points between the center and side seams on both bodice or waistband, pinning there. Then found the midpoints between those. This ensured that my gathers were evenly distributed. I used lots and lots of pins while distributing those gathers. 2) Rather than stitching on the bodice side, I stitched on top of the bottom line of basting (I'd stitched that evenly at 5/8"). With so many pins and the gathers, visible, I never needed to baste. This approach ensured that the fabric was smooth under the presser foot and I never had a problem with lower fabric creeping into the seam. If any basting stitch showed after sewing the seam, it was easy to remove. This approach guarantees the smoothest, most evenly distributed and pleat-free gathers you could hope to find. A similar approach works for gathers in sleeves, though fewer dividing points will be involved there.

Do you have a video on how to adjust the crotch depth front & back on a one piece pant pattern. No one seems to have done a video on this. I did follow this video for the 2-leg patterns and they came out great. Thank you..Also, if you do not know how, might you know of a video that I am overlooking.? Thanks again.

I hope you can help me with this …I have some blouses that I like very much. I like collars to stand erect. I would like to see if I can open up the collar and put an interfacing to make the collars stand up. Can I do that? I am not the best seamstress but I feel I could make this happen perhaps if you can make a suggestion how I go about making the collars stand up to some, blouses that I own. Thank you in advanced.

Also a lot of older mechanical machines are more heavy duty than the cheaper newer machines. If you want to hem jeans and have a low budget for example it often makes way more sense to get a machine from the 70's or 50's than to buy a new machine for under $300. Older machines more often have metal parts inside that can withstand a lot of stress. New machines have nylon insides that are prone to getting bent out of shape. The old machine probably won't have an automatic buttonhole and will only have two stitches, but you can do an amazing amount with just a straight stitch and a zig zag. And you so often can get them for free and the only cost is just to get it serviced if it hasn't been used in awhile

I cannot figure out how to topstitch the hidden pocket without stitching the opening up. Any help would be appreciated.

Do you HAVE to (in my case) shorten BOTH the front and the back pattern pieces? I always find the front rise is a bit too long for me in many pants I make but the rear seems fine. Can you shorten the front without shortening the back? Will this cause logistic errors in construction?
